It’s been two weeks since FUNimation premiered its long-form trailer for Darker Than Black, which recently had its English cast announced at NYAF, on its weekly Quickie video podcast. I thought it was well put together and one of the best anime trailers I’ve seen in a while, but I rolled my eyes when I saw the tagline they chose: “Everyone Wears A Mask”. After seeing that they were giving away shirts bearing that slogan last weekend, I decided I HAD to do something with the phrase so I chose to have some fun using some other mask-wearing characters that came to my mind last night. Check them out after the jump and feel free to best my efforts with more humorous ones.

The August 2008 issue of Dengeki Daioh hit stores in Japan yesterday and the 900-page, 35-work copies are so thick that a stack inside the Akihabara Gamers reached the roof. (Those interested in what’s inside the issue can read this post on Akihabara Channel.)

There were even some attached to the side of a sidewalk kiosk.

Stacked Volume 1 of Honey & Clover
From top to bottom: Japanese, German, English

When I was in Germany last August, I bought the first volume of Honey and Clover and wrote about how Tokyopop GmbH was releasing titles noticably ahead of US licensors. Now that Viz’s English version has hit shelves, I bought one of those and looked for differences and similarities between the German and American adaptations. What follows is a comparison of many features between the two in attempt to determine which is the better visual adaptation.

Something that has irritated me lately has been the increasing trend of DVD volumes coming with the disc inside the case and that’s it. Recent examples in my buying experience have been the regular edition of Haruhi vol. 1, Red Garden vol. 1 and Pumpkin Scissors vol. 1. Seeing the empty space on the inside left side of the case when I open it for the first time triggers a sense of disappointment because I have an expectation that there was some sense of effort put into the packaging including the inserts.

I feel bad that I haven’t been posting as much as I would like due to school picking up again. However, I don’t feel really bad since I haven’t had much to write about lately. Anyway, yesterday afternoon, I found something to center a composition around. I was in Fry’s to ask about a recording device for some kind of security camera setup for my house at the co-op and after I got pointed in the right direction and took some notes, I wandered over the games section to see if they had any deals. There weren’t many but there WAS something that surprised me.

Copies of Katamari Damacy at Fry's
Plentiful shrinkwrapped copies of Katamari Damacy at its original price of $20! (The game is also “in stock” on frys.com at the same price.) By comparison, Gamestop only has used copies priced at $29.99, ten dollars more. I didn’t have a PS2 back when it was released in the summer of 2004 but now that I own one, I instantly grabbed one off the shelf while wondering why this store still had a fair number of new copies three years after its release.

The September and December 2007 issues of Shonen Ace, respectively.

Last week I ordered two issues of Shonen Ace from Akadot Retail mainly for the pack-in extras (got the tip for December from Furu Anime Panikku) and received them in the mail Wednesday. The “appendix” for September’s issue was a Haruhi battery-operated fan while December had a medium size Evangelion T-shirt meant to celebrate the 13th anniversary of Shonen Ace. More pictures after the jump.

Okay, those of you who are knowledgable with kanji, please tell me why there is a difference between Thomas and Tom when writing them in Chinese? I found these two cards on a rack near the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) in Düsseldorf and wanted to know what each says. It would also be appreciated if you could point out any inaccuracies.

Last week, I foolishly bought 25 Geneon DVDs for $100 from RightStuf and they arrived at my regular home Wednesday, waiting for me until I came home from Davis on Friday. The problem is that I had to pack three small boxes to take home the discs that I had in my apartment. While I was carrying them to the car, I came to the realization that I have too many DVDs (anime and domestic films).

Akibablog has some photos of “Sony Sauce” (a pun of the katakana for the word “source”) made by a company called Bulldog. It mocks the Sixaxis’s Emmy win-that-wasn’t and plays on the console’s resemblance to a George Foreman grill. The “20GB” version has been discounted from 499 yen to 399 while the “60GB” has an open price but has a recommended sales tag of 599 yen. Ken Kutagari’s proud face on the front just to seem to give it a little bit of officiality, doesn’t it?
