While attending Fanime 2009 in late May, I recorded most of the panels I went to with the exceptions being Meet the Anime Vice Squad (forgot) and Nerd Courting (because it was 3 hours!). You may hear some rustling noises caused by when I was shifting around or, in the case of Carl Horn’s panels, flipping through the samples he gave the audience pass around.
Music during lead-ins: “Blue Little” by 10:32 (album: Ghostly Swim – link)
On this episode of the Nigorimasen Podcast (aka the N-Pod – no? maybe not, then), I talked with lelangir about how he came to begin blogging less than a year ago, his interest in music, theory posting, and knowledge production.
As I mentioned in a SacAnime post in January, I recorded a few interviews and a couple panels using a recently purchased portable recorder. I finally got my act together and combined them into one long podcast episode. Don’t worry, time markers are in the show notes below.
UPDATE 3/7 6AM PST: The first upload of this episode included panels being cut off near the end due to screw-ups when I converted the original WMA recordings into an editable format. A fixed, more full-featured version has since been uploaded.
(12:01 – 1:07:59) Tom Kane panel (IMDB); my favorite part was about Invasion Iowa. The occasional noise at the beginning is me trying to look through the program guide and moving the recorder around.
(1:08:07 – 2:01:08) Full Metal Alchemist panel with Vic Migogna, Travis Willingham, and Laura Bailey. I inserted Vic’s introduction from this panel during this episode’s introduction because I couldn’t be bothered to pronounce his name correctly.
(2:01:08 – 2:02:14) Sendoff
(2:02:11 – 2:03:12) “Water Forest”, composed by Yoko Kanno (Darker Than Black BGM)
Transitions:

I talked yesterday afternoon with wildarmsheero of Mistakes of Youth about his webcomic, Gundam, that ANN-Kite Liberator thing (link), lolicon, and other subjects. By the way, I should have said “swing” instead of “jazz” or “bebop” in describing Oh! Edo Rocket’s soundtrack.
WARNING: there are some instances of cursing in this episode from myself and my guest.
Music:
“Naked Story”, performed by Garnet Crow (Secret of Cerulean Sand opening)
“Umi Yori Mo Fukaku”, sung by Etsuko Sai (G Gundam 1st ending)
While researching a long post a few months back, I came across an advertisement inside the final issue of Newtype USA for Gurren Lagann volume 1 from ADV Films carrying the now phantom release date February 26, 2008. Twelve pages later was a four-page feature and fifty pages after that was a review of vol. 1, which had been declared “DVD of the Month”.
TTGL was intended to be ADV’s next big action success and the initial dub cast had already been revealed in January (as well as a loud announcer trailer) but it got caught up in the Sojitz licensing fiasco and fell into licensing limbo. Bandai snapped up the rights a few months later and has proceeded to handle it very well, swiftly putting out sub-only nine-episode sets to please the big fans and hybrid volumes in double-single bundles just like how they began releasing Code Geass on DVD.
In this episode of Reading Out Loud, I read the featured article and the review (along with the sidebar to the review) as well attempt to project how the rest of ADV’s roll out might have gone in contrast to Bandai’s current effort (while repeating some of the background info I gave above). After the jump is a timeline of the series’ development and some tangentially related stories. Also: a chart of the voice actors I listed off during the final segment.
Music Used:
“Ookami ga Kita!!” (from Gurren Lagann BEST SOUND)
“Mawatte Mawatte Mawatte Mawatte Tetete…” (BEST SOUND)
“Douda! Ore no Trumpet wa Sugoi Darou!!” (BEST SOUND) Giant Gorg opening theme (YouTube link)
“Nessa no Areno wo Nukete dai Gurren Dan ga Iku no da” (BEST SOUND) Read the rest of this entry »
On this edition of the Nigorimasen! Podcast, I converse with Hinano and jpmeyer about RenAi Blogger, Pangya, a certain almanacker, fan artists, how the number of interesting series has declined year-over-year (I was trying to think of Michiko To Hatchin), a bit of graphic novel talk, and more. Don’t forget to attend the panel that they and DS are hosting at NYAF – Saturday, September 27th 12:30-1:30 pm in the Anime Fandom Room (Room 1A14)!
I’m sorry if you can hear faint static – when I tried to use noise removal, the speech sounded like we were underwater so I ended up not tweaking it that way. Also, I’m also experimenting with podPress because I want to get download estimates; the former streaming interface will show up if you click “Play Now” below. Enjoy!

Leave feedback in the comments or email to podcast [at] nigorimasen [dot] com. Next week (if I create one) will be a solo episode and will likely be shorter than usual but I won’t guarantee anything.
For this week’s edition of the Nigorimasen Podcast, I interviewed Omo from Omonomono and we also talked about conventions, the PS3 download experience, indescribable Japanese terms, and AMV’s. Feel free to leave feedback in the comments or e-mail questions, guest suggestions, or other concerns to podcast [at] nigorimasen [dot] com.
Music
Opening: “The Clear Blue Sky”, sung by Aki Misawa (from Sound Online’s The Clear Blue Sky)
Ending: “Tabibito”, sung by Ikeda Ayako (B-side from Dennou Coil single)
The first episode of the Nigorimasen! Blogcast was recorded last night with IcyStorm of Minimum Tempo fame as my guest. There was actually some more interesting stuff after the main recording, like magazine subscriptions and rhythm games, so I also crafted a ‘mega’ version that is twenty minutes longer. P.S. I apologize in advance for laughing into my headset mic.
Show notes:
- we began talking about AX a bit (it’s dakimakura, not daimakura – my bad)
- I try to explain Mave-chan (which transitions into discussing the Lucky Star dub & pack-in extras)
- we changed topics to digital anime sales (iTunes, PSN, et al.)
- PLUG: MT is looking for writers! (I also promise to submit some articles.)
- my impressions of playing Naruto: ROAN
- I ask to have Aria explained to me
- I later try to pitch Kiba to Icy
- Mega Version: yet another slipup by me – Donkey Konga and Taito no Tatsujin don’t have lyrics but rather kuchi shoga.
Music: Opening: “Punctured”, performed by Electric Eel Shock Ending (standard): “You are the only one”, sung by Kotono Mitsuishi [lyrics] Ending (mega): “Boin VS Boin” from Gurren Lagann BEST SOUND
It has been three months ago since I recorded the last episode of Amateur Otaku Radio and I felt like it was time to try reviving it with a different name – the Nigorimasen! Blogcast, at the moment (very unoriginal) – and an slightly altered style. I’ve given up on TalkShoe because of the time scheduling and general interface and also because I feel more comfortable recording on my own time, hopefully with some other people, and posting a finished episode instead of pulling down a low-quality recording and uploading a reworked version.
I want to use Skype more so I plan to involve other people through interviews or dual-hosting – anything to make it more interesting than going solo and rambling for almost an hour and being distracted by sports on the TV. I will likely do this first one solo but if anyone wants to help me get more acclimated to using Skype, my handle is on the contact page and if you are available tomorrow night or would like to be on the air, let me know.
I’ll also try to answer any questions and topic suggestions on the show that are submitted through comments on the previous episode’s post or emails to blogcast [at] crumplednapkin [dawt] net podcast AT nigorimasen DAWT com.
The least of what I plan to cover when I record tomorrow afternoon/evening PDT are:
- my experiences at AX 2008 (won’t try to dwell on this too long)
- short reviews of the stuff I picked up there (manga and others)
- my first couple weeks owning a 360
- recent happenings in legal downloadable anime
While flipping through some of my older issues of Newtype USA recently, I found a feature story on Bee Train within the March 2005 issue. Written by Amos Wong, the story was well-timed as the first DVD volume of Madlax was to come out in America soon after on April 12th of that year. I enjoyed reading the feature when I originally bought the magazine and again when re-reading for this episode because it gave me a look into the origin and development methods of the studio that was deeper than I had obtained through the inserts packaged with Noir DVD’s.
