They are the usual no-dialogue teasers with either the opening and ending song as music and narrative trailers with some footage that overlapped with the teasers. If I had only seen the trailers and not any episodes, I would be interested in watching Red Garden (zombie hit by a truck!), kind of like to see Pumpkin Scissors (”In a country ravaged by war…”), and not care for Welcome to the NHK (”porn” is said three times…) and Xenosaga (never played the games). I don’t believe that Red Garden is the “most anticipated horror thriller of the year”, though. Videos after the jump. More “A, B, C” Title Discussion; ADV “Ready for Bear”?Posted on June 30th, 2007 by calaggie in Anime, LicensesRemember John Ledford’s mention of “B” titles a month ago? I had kind of forgotten about it until I came upon two things recently that mentioned it. This week’s edition of the AnimeNation News Podcast released on Thursday covered the topic and an ICv2 interview with Mike Balliff, ADV Senior VP of Sales, mentioned the phrase in a question about whether popularity in Japan is a good indicator of success in America. Every week on the AnimeNation News Podcast, the hosts cover the news of the past week as well as two or three Ask John questions. The question from June 22nd, “Why Don’t ‘B’ Titles Sell in America Anymore?”, was the first of two to be discussed and below is the audio from the June 28th episode: Tags: adv films, industry, NewsADV’s Ledford: “No market for B and C titles anymore”Posted on May 31st, 2007 by calaggie in Anime, NewsYesterday, ANN posted a two-page interview with John Ledford in which topics spanning the revival of their manga department, licensing, and the anime market in general. One thing I took note of when reading it was Ledford’s reference to A, B, and C ranked titles. First, he used the term referring to buying habits:
A question later, he used it in discussing retail shelf space:
So, don’t be surprised if certain anime with little or no profit potential in America stays unlicensed for many years even though you REALLY want it to appear on Region 1 DVD. When I win the lottery, I’ll put some of the money toward starting my own anime licensing business and form the “silly company” that Ledford referred to that produces B or C titles. Hopefully, the quality will be better than what Illumitoon first put out and maybe it’ll start out subbed-only with lower MSRPs to get people to buy the titles with less buzz. Oh well, it’s just a idea at the moment – I don’t even know what I’d call this fake business! Most of those sound like they would be good fits with ADV’s marketing but I am a little concerned about NHK, probably because I’ve watched the most of that one out of the bunch. Here’s the release breakdown from the press release:
Thank God My Batch Download Finished Last NightPosted on April 28th, 2007 by calaggie in Licenses, NewsThe surprise seemingly-out-of-nowhere news of the week is ADV’s license of AIR the anime and its subsequent 87-minute movie. The company has set the release date for the first of four volumes as August 14 and stated a new DVD will come out each month – this means that all of AIR will have been brought to the R1 market by the end of November. That’s like Viz releasing three volumes of the Naruto manga a month from September to December, except with video discs. I think it’s worth noting out that it was last Friday that ADV announced at Anime Boston that the first volume of Innocent Venus will come out on August 21. In that particular press release, you can read rep David Williams describing the anime as “combin[ing] the sci-fi noir of Logan’s Run with the fast-paced action of Gantz”. P.S. I am not lying about the title of this post. I actually did finish downloading AIR the TV series (but not the movie) last night and was – and still am – planning to watch it this weekend, although I’m going to be occupied with yard work part of Saturday and I have a paper due Thursday… Tags: adv films, air, downloads, LicensesPotluck: Delays, .hack//Roots Premieres, ADV BucksPosted on November 8th, 2006 by calaggie in News, PotluckRight now, I am trying to create rough member card mockups for Anime Club as well as a tentative schedule for the remainder of the year. After the jump: two DVD collections get delayed, hack//ROOTS premiere details, and ADV incentivizes its digital distribution service. PaniPoni Dub Trailer; ADV Website Fun FactsPosted on October 21st, 2006 by calaggie in Commentary, WebsitesI was kicking around ifilm’s new beta site and found a trailer of PPD on there. It features dubbed voices of most of the main characters (”Becky, Himeko, et al.) and it was uploaded by ADVONLINE so it’s most likely official. It also introduces the characters similar to how the press release for the dub does (e.g. Rei is “The Heather”, Himeko “The Spaz”). This method continues for good effect up until the narrator reaches Kamineko, “the cat who lives in the soda machine who says he’s God”. That name in English may seem silly but that’s actually what the original title translates to. Actually, the name Gokujo Seitokai is an abbreviation of whatever “Maximum Authority Holders Highest Level Student Council” is in Japanese (screenshot from OP below). After hearing about ADV Universe on the Anime Nano Podcast, I decided to try out the service with the free AWA promo episode of Guyver. The initial paid offerings include some recent releases (Comic Party Revolution) and some old stuff (Nurse Witch Komugi). Under the “Coming Soon” category there are titles such as Utawarerumono, Diamond Daydreams and Super Milk-Chan (all dubbed). The site asks you read the EULA twice, once when you register for an account and another time when you make a purchase. I copy-and-pasted the agreement to a text file and found some interesting things in it. Read the rest of this entry » Tags: adv films, Anime, downloads, drm |
