12 Moments 2010 Day 9: Curtland Stands Up For Her Students

Akiko, Anna, and Koume in the chancellor’s office

In episode 3 of Taisho Baseball Girls, Ouka Kai is formed as a club to promote Westernized culture, even though that’s only a cover so the girls can have a school-sanctioned baseball team. The foreign-born English language teacher, Anna Curtland, defends the club’s worth against fellow teacher Ooguchi’s attempt to deny it for being having a negative effect on the students’ classwork.

The chancellor then walks into the conversation and Anna argues to her that there’s teamwork involved and that a sacrifice bunt is “a way to express a basic, selfless act of voluntary social service” (Sentai’s subtitles). She agrees with the chancellor’s question of whether it would instill wholesomeness & integrity into the girls. The club is approved as an unsponsored organization, meaning they wouldn’t get a budget or be provided equipment but they do get a beat up shack which they fix up into their clubhouse.

The training sequence that comes right after was fantastic as we get to watch the girls get a better grasp of the sport and fielding groundballs. I have liked most of the characters in Taisho Baseball Girls so far (only through the 1st disc) and Anna is probably my favorite along with determined catcher Koume.
