The accident that caused a magnetic field to appear on the island
First of 12 entries for this year’s “Twelve Moments in Anime” project.
Soul Eater was one of the series that my university’s anime club started showing in the fall. I had begun watching the series with the rest of the club but stopped regularly attending meetings to focus on working toward graduation. I previously expressed last year that the early story didn’t impress me very much and resigned to myself that I likely have “outgrown contemporary multi-character shonen fare” so I didn’t care about missing core story elements – I could still appreciate the action, BONES’ animation, and the series’ sense of style, though. Once spring came around, I stopped by on occasion and watched a couple out-of-order episodes and, by early June, the club had gotten to episode 34, where the Brew arc begins.
Another club member and I are avid watchers of “Lost” so we started to pick up on similarities within the episode to that TV show. Specifically: the characters were heading to a big island in the middle of the ocean, there was an explosion in the past (like the Incident), a special magnetic field existed on the island, and some characters entered that field and saw a particular event as it happened in the past (not exactly time travel but close enough).
I may give Soul Eater another shot sometime next year once I’m done with some higher-priority series. FUNimation has posted the first 40 episodes on their video portal (show page) as of this post.
