Potluck: Winter Finals Edition

Finals week means much studying (drawn by モト)

In this nose-in-the-books edition of Potluck: a once-missing 14-year-old anime fan is found, a few blogging community matters, Kurokami on domestic DVD, and an update on Kadokawa’s subtitling efforts.

Deborah Fourzan Found #
Remember last month when an Oklahoma girl named Deborah Fourzan went missing and was supposedly headed to Ikkicon and other conventions with her captor, Jim Reimer? Well, she got found (saw on Anime Vice) in Montesano, Washington, after Reimer was stopped for “routine traffic violations”. I didn’t know this but apparently her case was on America’s Most Wanted on February 28th – embedded below is a clip from the episode, wherein it is hinted that Reimer may have cosplayed as Sajin Komamura from Bleach.

Imaginative Blog Mergers #
DS wrote a purely speculative post about potential blog mergers in the vein of JP and Hinano’s joint venture. This blog was paired with the currently inactive Hop Step Jump! – I feel slightly honored but I’m concerned about the low combined post frequency.

One Team Blog Stalled, Another Confirmed Dead #
Speaking about inactive blogs, two collective blogging operations have gone more than a month without new posts: Yukan Blog! since January 14th and Oi, Hayaku! since February 6th. I expressed some faint skepticism of OH based on the writers’ styles when the site’s contributors were making their introduction posts but I didn’t expect it to grind to a halt after about five months. ghostlightning wrote about why many of the authors are slowing down, stopping altogether and/or expressing their opinions on Twitter than in a composed blog entry.

With regard to Yukan, blissmo posted on her more personal blog that she began to constantly worry about what sort of comments would be left by readers on posts and then got bored with the whole thing. So she and the other team members agreed to leave the site and their posts untouched. I can understand the reasoning behind halting the blog and preserving past posts (one useful example: the now-defunct but still accessible online magazine Animefringe) but a notice on the blog’s main page would be helpful for occasional visitors and those who might stop by 6 months or a year from now.

Kurokami Part 1 To Be Released June 26th #
While checking out RightStuf’s current sale on Bandai products, I learned that Kurokami Part 1, which covers the first eight episodes, is set to come out on June 26th – something I would have known on Monday if I regularly checked their new additions. The series is slated to go for 24 episodes, meaning Parts 2 and 3 should also have 8 episodes each. The time between Japanese airing and DVD release is a relatively quick four months, considering episode 8 aired on Feb. 26th.

After watching and writing about the first episode back in January, I have yet to progress further, due to not being immediately won over and also a general winter watching malaise. I still hope that it “won’t preach overt fatalism” and “Ibuki’s presence doesn’t develop into a trope of unintended perniciousness” but I may not find out for a while since it’s currently behind many other titles on my catch-up docket from the fall and winter seasons.

Kadokawa Haruhi-chan/Churuya-san Sub Typos Update #
The digital distribution portion of the latest AICN Anime included a link to my critique of Kadokawa’s typos and other errors in their official subtitles for Haruhi-chan and Churuya-san. More episodes, and more typos, have come out since then and I figure it would be prudent to lay out the latest ones here first and maybe update the old post later.

Haruhi-chan #7
1:47 – “Since a huge darken space is born, I have to go.” => dark/darkened space, has formed?
3:17 – “unable to bare the child being hurt was the winner” => bear
3:20 – “As for me, I’ll get what I want even if I brake it.” => break

Haruhi-chan #8
1:04 – “Icy isolation.” – not an error, it’s a good play on words!
2:39 – “This kimono is weighs tons! I can’t move.” – drop “is”

Haruhi-chan #9
0:58 – “Maybe, a love-hate lunch time soup opera might win popularity” => soap opera, though a soup one sounds tasty.
1:28 – “I build up a story based on the key words you all provided.” => built (up), pref. constructed?
2:09 – “The things they do when their dying.” => they’re

Haruhi-chan #10
1:50 – “No again!” => Not

Churuya-san #4
0:15 – “I equipped with silent mode, to answer to social needs.” => either “am/I’m equipped” or “equipped a”

Churuya-san #5
0:15 – “Let me have water.” – no problem, “some” could be added
