Ouran Dub Video – In German

As a preface to the upcoming announcement of the main English dub cast, I figured people might be interested in how another country’s dub of Ouran sounds. Someone videotaped a portion of episode 6 from an Anime-Virtual DVD with Polish subtitles and it provides a sample of voices from each main character, which sound pretty good IMO.

According to Amazon.de, the company released the first nine episodes in a 2-disc set on April 28th with the second volume (ep. 10-18) due out on July 28 and the third set (ep. 19-26) on October 27. Sounds good, right? Well, each set costs 40 to 43 Euros – a price that converts to about US$63-67 – meaning all three will add up to about US$198. It also seems like those will not have many extra features considering they’re fitting five episodes onto a single disc so America might be getting a better deal. There has been no announcement about whether Funimation will distribute the series in singles or in box sets but I have a suspicion that they will go the volume-by-volume route considering the popularity of the series compared to, say, Aquarion.

One thing I would like to know is how much German licensors like Anime-Virtual and SPV as well as other European companies like France’s Kaze are paying for series compared to American licensors since the cost of acquisition is tied to how much a studio plans to charge for its discs. For example, the first volume of El Cazador de la Bruja (ep. 1-5) came out in Germany on June 9th and is priced at 22 Euros (USD $34.60) and the first volume of Haruhi (ep 1-4) debuted the same day for the same price (a special edition with a series box, 24-page booklet and wall scroll cost 25 Euros). Kaze is putting out the first volume (ep 1-4) of Haruhi at 25 Euros on July 9th. So the standard price seems to be 20-25 Euros per single – relatively on par with the $25-30 MSRP in terms of raw number but more costly due to the currency exchange.
