Going to AOD 2008 This Weekend

This weekend I shall be attending the Animation on Display convention at the Cathedral Hill Hotel in San Francisco and planning to hand out my new Moo minicards around the dealers’ hall and general con space as well as recording some short video segments inside and outside the hall. Even though I’m not going as press, I have been told I can interview people so long as they sign a waiver so I’m currently putting the finishing touches on that document. Although there are no guests I am looking forward to seeing, there are some events I want to check out…

  • Marv Wolfman & Ken Pontac: Writing Animation (Sat 1pm-2pm)
    Title says it all.
  • Anime Bingo [in-line text ad] (Sat 5pm-6pm)
I’m likely not going to stay the whole time but I could at least try my hand at it. Bonus points if they use one of those giant spinning cage wheels and not an air-pusher machine.
  • Game Show (Sat 7pm-9pm)
It’s a game show, which means prizes! But I might ditch this if it gets boring.
  • Animation Industry Insight (Sun 11am-12pm)
12-year industry insider Sean McCoy talking about the many production roles involved in animation and the business of bringing anime and manga to an English-speaking audience.
  • Swap Meet (Sun 7pm-10pm)
I attended the swap meet at Fanime 2007 and found some interesting items including Lupin sideburns. Strangely this is one of the last events of this con compared to Fanime’s taking place the first night (Friday).
  • Open Mic Karaoke (Sat 7:30pm-10pm/Sun 5-7pm, 8-10pm)
Expect a video of myself singing to appear sometime after the con.

Finally (and most importantly): is anyone in the SF area willing to let me crash at their place Saturday night? I’m reluctant to pay for a one night hotel stay and I’d definitely feel strange directly asking someone at the con if I could sleep on their floor. Being invited to hang in someone’s room might be a more likely option and that’s closely related to my goal of making new contacts. Anyway, if you’re going to the con at all, comment or send me an e-mail so we can walk around together or something.

I am not all that into anime, however, some of my friends are. I just can’t imagine, though, asking perfect strangers on the internet if you can crash at their place. Not in the worl we live in today anyways.
