The long-expected Lucky Star character singles were released a couple weeks ago and thus I am doing another music review based on a release playing to the fans of a particular series. Each single offers two songs, the respective off vocal versions, and a cut-together minute-long voice samples that has been manipulated through looping, lengthening, speeding up, and other techniques. I’m not giving numerical ratings this time because it’s a little tedious to assign numbers.

Konata’s single begins with “Dondake Fanfare” begins with rhythmic keyboarding, features a good rock beat with bass along with 8-bit sounds in the background in portions, and includes a bit of Rip-Slyme-like fast-talking during the verses. The B-side “D-Drive/Love” has a synthesizer march backing, has some self-worrying in the middle, and is an okay song but a little worse than Dondake.

Next is Kagami: “Kenka Yohou no Jikan dayo” also has some fast lyrics in many of the verses, a similar rock pace to Dondake, and a nice regular-paced chorus. “100% nai nai nai” is a notable contrast from the first track as it sounds like a traditional J-Pop song with its slow, more laid-back pace and bridge vocals being sung by backups.

“Ne Tou ge de Reset!”, the first track of Tsukasa’s set, has a heavy electro backtrack on it and the cute singing by Fukuhara Kaori makes it one of my favorite songs from the entire quartet. The B-side “Sister Wars” on the other hand is less appetizing to me probably because of “poto-poto-poto-poto-poto-poto” but it’s still a fine tune.

Miyuki’s first track, “Moe Yousotte nan desu ka?”, sounds like a synth pop song from the 80’s with a drum kit but that’s not a bad thing. That was my other favorite actual song out of the eight total because it reminds of that style. B-side “Tabun Kanari Futsuu no Kyuujitsu” is slower-paced and a little more annoying due to the syllable-by-syllable singing in many parts but it definitely sounds cute and has the character answering the door for pizza in the later portion so it has those things going for it.

Overall, I thought this set of singles were better on average than some of the Haruhi character singles (e.g Kyon’s sister, Kyon). I like both of Kagami’s songs and the first tracks from the other three. I also particularly enjoyed the manipulation tracks by r-midwest because they were strange and catchy.
