Last week, I foolishly bought 25 Geneon DVDs for $100 from RightStuf and they arrived at my regular home Wednesday, waiting for me until I came home from Davis on Friday. The problem is that I had to pack three small boxes to take home the discs that I had in my apartment. While I was carrying them to the car, I came to the realization that I have too many DVDs (anime and domestic films).
I would get rid of some of them, perhaps the movie ones, but I am a little uneasy about selling them and then wanting to watch them again and not having them anymore. Same goes for video games, although there are a couple of those that I would mind parting with. I have more anime than movies on DVD, which concerns me because I have a long list of over 160 movies I would like to see in order to expand my cultural literacy. I get through those by watching them on demand through cable or, more preferably because it’s widescreen, using a rent-by-mail service such as Netlfix or Blockbuster Online.

Unfortunately, I also want to expand my anime literacy and that requires either hard drive space or shelf space. I usually burn fansubs to discs so I can later reference them or use them for sharing with friends so the storage problem there is easily remedied. The possibility of signing up for Rent Anime has cropped up in my mind a couple times to reduce overall expenses of seeing licensed anime but I think I will have the same problem that I had when I tried out Blockbuster Online and Netflix over the past two months - namely, letting the movies sit unwatched for days at a time or forgetting to send them out for new ones. I had a good experience with both so I am likely to sign up for another trial this summer and another when I return to school.
I’ll probably simply take the discs out of their cases, store them in the same zip-up case that currently holds my fansub backups, and leave the cases at home. I just needed to type this out and . Maybe this won’t be as much of a problem if I stayed in one place for more than a year and did not have to pack everything up. Oh well, perhaps that will happen when I get a steady job and graduate, which is still at least a year away.

25 DVDs for $100? That’s a damn good deal.
I typically find that if I were to get rid of DVDs, I would eliminate the longer series (26+ episodes) first. They tend to have the lowest rewatchability factor (because I would just watch the first few episodes, then lose the motivation to finish the rest). They also take up the most shelf space.
The DVD distro here sucks big time.
Yer 25 DVDs for $100was a real good deal.
Its tough to have sufficient space for an otaku to store his/her tons of DVD, magazines and figurines.
What program do you use to burn your animes onto disks?
You also bought a huge load at the auction. XD
Oh, if you want to trade DVDs sometimes… like Moon Phase…. or well random stuff I get from the newspaper, I’ll forward them along.
@Asuka: Yeah, the longer 24/26-episode series do take up about 2 DVD cases worth of space more than short 12/13-episode ones. I should get more thinpacks whenever I start shopping again but the missing extras and redesigns are preventing me doing it more often. For example, the design for the Excel Saga thinpack makes me shudder.
@kent: I alternate between Nero or Sonic RecordNow! and I’m generally indifferent over which is better.
@Chiaki: Actually I think I bought only 3 mangas, 1 DVD, and that PaniPoni figure. I did manage to get rid of my extra Excel Saga DVD but I still have the 10-15 mangas that didn’t sell. We definitely need more plushies and figures next year.
Thanks CalAggie.
