OK, this hopefully will be the final set of reviews for Haruhi character singles I will write because I’ve started to look back at how I rated previous songs in aiding me with scoring future ones and I shouldn’t really doing that. Anyway, volumes 8 and 9 of Koizumi and Kyon, respectively, finished off the ennead (group of nine) on a good note albeit with one thing that annoyed me. Also: I changed the poll question to “which MoSH character had the best single?” because the Kickoff ‘07 one has been up for about a month.

Vol.8 – Koizumi Itsuki [Ono Daisuke] LACM-4355 (lyrics)
1. Maggaare Spectacle (3:51) – 4.5/5
2. Hare Hare Yukai ~ Ver. Koizumi Itsuki (5:08) – 3.5/5
3. Maggaare Spectacle (off vocal) (3:40) – not rated
4. Hare Hare Yukai ~ Ver. Koizumi Itsuki (off vocal) (5:04) – not rated

Itsuki’s single “Maggaare Spectacle” sounded really good with Ono’s smooth voice and is a poppish tune that can get stuck in your head. His version of Hare Hare has the pace of a slow ballad.

Vol. 9 – Kyon [Sugita Tomokazu] LACM-4356 (lyrics)

1. Kentai Life Returns! (3:36) – 3.5/5
2. Hare Hare Yukai ~ Ver. Kyon (5:10) – 4/5
3. Kentai Life Returns! (off vocal) (3:36) – not rated
4. Hare Hare Yukai ~ Ver. Kyon (off vocal) (5:07) – not rated

Listening to “Kentai” was almost as frustrating as the character felt when forced to sing. The overlapping interjections were distracting from the actual music so thank goodness there are voiceless versions. Maybe the sarcastic comments were an intentional attempt to sabotage the single and I guess it worked if that were the intention. They may work in the anime and novels but don’t bring that kind of stuff into the realm of music and add needless vocal clutter. Haruhi’s joining in the chorus made me laugh a little. As for Hare Hare, there were fewer injective parts and the acoustic guitar and harmonica were good for the slower, more reflective pace, which reminded me of Kimidori’s version. Also Kyon’s small spoken word bit at around 3:50 made me think of Shatner with his dramatic inflection.

“But wait”, you might say, “what about the talking during ‘Maggaare Spectacle’? Don’t you have a problem with that as well?” Well, I feel that is a little more acceptable because the conversations between Itsuki, Yuki, and Mikuru happen in seperate parts from the singing parts but it’s still somewhat distracting. Youko over at Kiza ze Inbou had a more favorable take on Kyon’s single.

Well…since Kyon is most famous for his sarcastic comments, I really think that even though his two songs are not good in artistic sense, they act well as character songs.

In Kyon’s Hare Hare Yukai, I think he complains about his involvement with Haruhi and all the incidents that follow.
He seems to be the kind of person content with an ordinary, dreamless life, as shown by this line

“Those who have infinite expection for tomorrow are weird. (Kagiri naku nozonderu yatsu ga mondai)”

But then at the end, he sort of gives in to Haruhi and say “Come on, let’s go. (hora isshni ikouze)”

So I think that song really fits him well…
